01 / OVERVIEW

An AI engineer in the terminal.

The person behind Claude Code - the agentic coding tool that moved AI assistance out of the editor sidebar and into the command line, where it can actually do the work.

Boris Cherny is the creator and head of Claude Code at Anthropic. Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that lives in the terminal: it reads a codebase, plans changes, edits files, runs commands, and works through tasks the way a capable engineer would - rather than just completing the next line.

His work sits at the center of one of the most consequential shifts in how software gets built: the move from autocomplete-style assistance to autonomous agents that take real actions in a real repository. The ergonomics of that experience - how an agent asks permission, shows its work, and stays inside the guardrails - are choices that shape how a growing number of developers now write code.

Before Claude Code he spent years deep in the developer-tools and type-systems world, and is well known in the TypeScript community as the author of a definitive book on the language. That background - a focus on tooling that makes the right thing easy - runs straight through the product he leads today.
